Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, is a fungal infection characterized by itching, burning, or stinging between toes or on the soles of your feet. Other symptoms can include cracking and peeling skin on your feet, thick and crumbly toenails, or toenails that are discolored or pull away from the nail bed. Athlete's foot, although usually not serious, is very contagious, and can be spread easily. The fungus lives in warm, moist environments, and is commonly found in public places that involve bare feet, such as public pools, locker rooms, and showers. Athlete's foot can often be treated with over the counter topical antifungal medications. However, if your athlete's foot doesn't clear up, your doctor will be able to treat your condition with topical or oral prescription-strength antifungal medications. If you think you have athlete's foot and also have a weakened immune system or are diabetic, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.
