There are a wide variety of causes and conditions that can cause foot and ankle pain or injury. If the foot or ankle pain is mild, doesn't interfere with daily life, or resolves on its own, these cases don't usually require medical treatment. However, if there is severe swelling or pain, an open wound or signs of infection, or your pain/injury is not improving with home care, it is recommended to see a doctor. If you are diabetic and have signs of an infection, an open wound, fever, or numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your feet, contact your doctor as soon as possible for treatment.
