A neuroma is a growth that forms in nerve cells, or an inflamed nerve between the bones of the foot. Neuromas can occur in many areas of the foot, commonly occurring in the space between toes. Symptoms can include burning pain in the area, tingling, numbness, or the feeling of a "lump" when standing. A few risk factors that may contribute to neuroma formation include wearing high-heeled shoes or shoes that are ill-fitting or tight, participating in high-impact, repetitive sports, or having existing foot deformities (high arches, flat feet, hammertoes). If you are experiencing symptoms that interfere with your daily activities despite at-home treatment (footwear change, rest, otc anti-inflammatory medicine), seek help from a podiatrist. A podiatrist will be able to provide other methods of treatment such as orthotic shoe inserts, injections, or possibly surgery to remove the neuroma.
