Sometimes our toenails require more attention than routine trimming, particularly in the case of ingrown toenails. An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or corner of your toenail grows down into the skin of your toe, usually causing pain, redness, and inflammation. The big toe is commonly affected, but all toenails have the potential to become ingrown. Ingrown toenails can be caused by cutting toenails too short or at an angle, wearing tight shoes, or toenail trauma (dropping object on toe, stubbing toe). Some cases of ingrown toenail don't require medical intervention, and can be treated with home remedies such as Epsom salt soaks or otc antibiotic ointment applied to the area. However, if you are unable to get relief, toenail remains ingrown or looks infected, or you experience recurrent ingrown toenails, see a doctor. Your doctor or podiatrist can prescribe oral antibiotics and may recommend removal of the toenail to prevent future problems. At Parkway Foot & Ankle, we provide routine nail trimming and generalized foot care, as well as treatment and removal of ingrown toenails.
